Helene Von Rosenstiel, Gail Caskey Winkler, FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS, FLOOR COVERINGS Ref: BUI-001

Wood Planks and Oriental Rugs weren't the only floor coverings found in America's old houses. In fact, a rich array of floor treatments have been used--from brick, tile and linoleum to mats and floorcloths, from rag rugs to ingrain, embroidered and pile carpets. And, of course, Oriental rugs on wood floors. Finding just the right floor covering to furnish an old house or to create a period look in any building has always been a challenge. Now, Floor Coverings for Historic Buildings explains how to choose and buy the correct floor coverings used between 1750 and the 1930s, including where to order 475 reproductions described here in detail. This invaluable catalog, illustrated with 175 photographs, also provides a history of American floors,a glossary of floor covering terms, addresses for 82 suppliers (many of whom fill custom and special orders), a reading list and sources of help.

James Ayres, DOMESTIC INTERIORS: The British Tradition 1500 -1850 Ref: CHT0088

This is a much expanded and revised and re-titled version of an earlier (1981) work by the author, Book of the Home in Britain. Much has been written about aristocratic homes of this period, but this book deals with the kind of furnishings that a smaller or 'middle class' home would have had. A wide range of subjects are covered including heating and lighting, wall coverings, doors and doorways, staircases and colour. Items we take for granted today, e.g. door locks, window glazing, floor boards and wallpaper were all too expensive for the average Tudor householder to contemplate owning. There was much more reliance on what natural products, e.g. clay, could be obtained locally to furnish and colour houses. The author presents a collection of his own line drawings and many photographs of surviving interiors and their details. Much of this material has not been readily available before. 260 pp. 66 colour photographs and 227 b&w photographs and drawings. 8 appendixes and a glossary. HB.

Daub has been used to coat the wattle and fill gaps and keep out rain in winter and heat in the summer and has been known to last for more than 500 years.
