A reprint of the 1894 expanded edition, which is considered second only to Holtzapffel in usefulness. The Britannia Lathe Company catalogue is an appendix which lists all types of lathes (including one named "The Lukin") and other quality machine tools of the time. The narrative section covers turning tools, hardwood, metal with hand tools, slide rest work in metal, the self-acting Beddow's (combined) epicycloidal, rose cutting, eccentric cutting, drilling, fluting and vertical cutting, the dome and ellipse chuck, goniostat and metal spinning.

Reprint of the 1868 edition. Written in the thirty-year period between Charles Holtzapffel's Vol III and John Jacob Holtzapffel's Vol IV. In addition to regular instruction in plain turning this has 133 pp. on ornamental turning (Part IV) and is still considered a valuable reference book for which Northcott was given the freedom of the Turners Company. The author was the first person to advocate the use of diamond-tipped tools for ornamental turning and deals in detail with the use of the geometric, or Ibbetson, chuck, laying down 39 rules for its use. Northcott was a contributor to "English Mechanic".
