Windsor Chairmaking Ref: JMWC

This book is the first new book about the making and design of Windsor chairs for over 10 years. James Mursell has written it with a broad readership in mind. It is aimed not only at existing Windsor chairmakers but also at those who are perhaps contemplating making their first chair.

Detailed plans are included for two English and two American chairs. It is also aimed at those who are interested in both English and American Windsor chairs - dealing with them together throughout the book for the first time.

Those who wish to make chairs in the same way that they were made in the 18th century will find Chapter 7 particularly interesting, as it discusses the lessons to be learned from the toolmarks left by an English maker on a chair dating from around 1750.

Finally Chapter 8 covers design and looks at the subtle messages that can be sent out by a chair which can be interpreted in the same way as human body language.

The book had 192 pages and is filled with colour photographs and line drawings throughout.

Chapter headings;

* Introduction
* Historical background
* Materials, equipment and tools
* Processes and techniques
* Two English chairs including plans
* Two American chairs including plans

Sam Maloof Inspired Chair Plan, DVD & Book Packages

Many woodworkers' have a wish list of projects that include making a "Maloof Inspired" rocking chair. Sam Maloof is perhaps not so well known in Europe but achieved living legend status for his work in the USA. Sam passed away in 2009 aged 93.

Classic Hand Tools' proprietor Mike Hancock was lucky enough, with rasp maker Michel Auriou, to meet Sam in 2006. Sam gave his visitors breakfast and a personal guided tour of his house and workshop. Sam was a real fan of Michel Auriou's rasps, it was a very memorable and humbling experience for the Englishman and Frenchman.

Sam Maloof's work is in the collections of several major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan have both owned Maloof rockers.

He was described by the Smithsonian Institution as "America's most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman" and People magazine dubbed him "The Hemingway of Hardwood." But his business card always said "woodworker." "I like the word," he told a Los Angeles Times reporter, his eyes brightening behind large, owl-eyed glass frames. "It's an honest word."
In 1985 Mr. Maloof became the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur fellowship, and despite such recognition, he declined to identify himself as an artist. His autobiography was titled Sam Maloof: Woodworker.
