Sam Maloof Inspired Chair Plan, DVD & Book Packages

Many woodworkers' have a wish list of projects that include making a "Maloof Inspired" rocking chair. Sam Maloof is perhaps not so well known in Europe but achieved living legend status for his work in the USA. Sam passed away in 2009 aged 93.

Classic Hand Tools' proprietor Mike Hancock was lucky enough, with rasp maker Michel Auriou, to meet Sam in 2006. Sam gave his visitors breakfast and a personal guided tour of his house and workshop. Sam was a real fan of Michel Auriou's rasps, it was a very memorable and humbling experience for the Englishman and Frenchman.

Sam Maloof's work is in the collections of several major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan have both owned Maloof rockers.

He was described by the Smithsonian Institution as "America's most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman" and People magazine dubbed him "The Hemingway of Hardwood." But his business card always said "woodworker." "I like the word," he told a Los Angeles Times reporter, his eyes brightening behind large, owl-eyed glass frames. "It's an honest word."
In 1985 Mr. Maloof became the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur fellowship, and despite such recognition, he declined to identify himself as an artist. His autobiography was titled Sam Maloof: Woodworker.

Charles Brock is very much a devotee of the Maloof way and has produced two DVD, Book & plan packages to help guide you to making your own Maloof inspired chair. The packages are designed to provide you with all the knowledge and confidence you will need to build your own chair.
