There are many designs of draw knife, many particular to a certain trade (e.g chair maker, cooper, handle maker, gun stock maker, mast maker, carpenter etc) and variations of patterns. The draw knife is used for the removal of excess timber, for rounding off stock and for chamfering, either freehand or in a shave horse,

There are some delightful old draw knives still to be found at boot fairs and specialist sales (but be careful to check that the edge is still good and that back of the blade is not pitted with cleaned out rust). We have a selection here of new draw knives to suit most budgets and size requirements, the newest of which from Forge de Saint Juery (home of Auriou Toolworks in France), who like the Gransfors Bruks Factory in Sweden, hand forge their draw knives.

NEW - Auriou 9" Curved Draw Knife Ref: AU-DK9

Auriou's high quality, hand-forged tools are well known to discerning woodworkers, Famous for their hand stitched rasps and rifflers Auriou are using their small team of highly skilled artisans to produce a small range of tools to balance their portfolio of tools. Launched in autumn 2010 this large, curved-blade draw knife is sure to become a favourite in green woodworking circles.

The 9" long curved blade has a gentle radius and an effective blade angle that gives fast, controlled cutting. Turned 5" French walnut handles with brass ferrules are spaced 13½" apart. There is a slight splay to the handles (about 8 degrees) which makes the action of drawing the knife toward you more comfortable (of course there are dozens of views on this but based on feedback received on their prototypes and the study of old designs Auriou decided this was the best compromise). The draw knife comes honed and ready for use. Weight 0.5 kgs (1.2 lbs).

Also available is a hand made quality leather protective sheath to protect you, your friends and the cutting edge from damage. This superior quality (genuinely) sheath is made by Kate Langley Jones from Essex.

NEW - Auriou Small Offset Draw Knife Ref: AU-DK6

Again, a new product from Forge de Saint Juery. A 6" wide, curved blade 1" deep, with offset handles (these are above the plane of the cutting edge giving knuckle clearance). this would be more useful for smaller stock removal and delicate trimming. Short 3¼" beech handles with brass ferrules.

Gransfors Swedish Drawknife 486 Ref: GA-486

This is a big beast and popular for quick removal of bark from logs and other large trimming work. The hickory handles are set on full-length tangs extending straight out from the ends of the blade. The blade is bowed up and curved forward in the centre for effective peeling, shaping and smoothing. The total length is 22 ½". The blade is 11 ½" in length and 1 ½" wide. It weighs 1lb. 5oz. The tool is provided with a grain-leather sheath with snap fasteners.

8" cutting edge, Mike Abbott, designed canted draw knife with beech handles. This 8” drawing knife has slightly flared handles which are bent backwards, meaning the handles are at approximately the same angle, whether you are using them back down, or cannel down.

This flexible draw knife has 5 inches of workable edge, designed to flex around contours where large amounts of stock need to be removed quickly. The tool can be flexed to accommodate concave or convex surfaces. Cuts can be made that conform more closely to the finished shape, taking less time to sand or scrape.
