Ron Hock Tools


Ron Hock has been making plane blades since 1981. He can best be described as a small metalworking cottage industry located in the middle of Mendocino's renowned woodworking enclave in Northern California.

Ron Hock's plane irons (or blades as many people like to call them) have been handcrafted to satisfy the demands of the most discriminating professional. Shaping, beveling, and slotting have been done by hand-grinding and precision machining. He is so darn good at it now he has had to outsource some of the production due to unprecedented demand!

Hock high carbon and cyrogenically treated A2 blades are to replace your worn out Stanley, Record, Marples blades. Hock makes replacement blades (and chipbreakers) for bench planes, block planes, scrapers and spokeshaves. He also makes wooden spokeshave blades, marking knives & burnishers.

Hock Blades for Bench Planes Ref: BPA

Ron Hock has earned an international reputation for the quality of his plane blades. Ron incorporates the same basic principles as used by 19th Century edge tools makers in his high carbon steel blades and updates these principles in his A2 cryogenically treated steel.

High carbon steel blades are easier to sharpen and will give you a fantastic cuting edge. However they will require more frequent sharpening.

Hock Chipbreakers Ref: HCB

To maximize your plane's performance, a thicker chip breaker (cap iron) can stabilize the blade's cutting edge reducing vibration and chatter. HOCK Chip Breakers are 3mm thick (.118"), almost twice as thick as a stock chip breaker and they come with with a knurled cap screw.

Hock Block Plane Blades Ref: BLA

Classic Hand tools offer four block plane blades all of which are 3/32" thick x 4 1/4" long. They will fit Stanley, Record and many other block planes.

Which HOCK blade do I need for my Block Plane?

We offer four different block plane blades in two different alloys.

The first determinant is the blade width, either 1 3/8" or 1 5/8". Check what width of blade you need as your starting point.

The next is the width of the slot in the centre of the blade. It will be either about 7/16" wide or about 5/8" wide.

Then choose whether you want your blade in High Carbon Steel (HC) or Cryogenically Treated A2 Tool Steel.

Ron Hock Carving Knives Ref: RH-CK

Ron Hock has been making blades and knives for nearly 30 years and is extremely well regarded as man who knows how to make fine blades. He has even written a fabulous book entitled The Perfect Edge which is a must read for all sharpening buffs. The blades of these comfortable carving knives are made from Hock's high carbon steel, hardened to Rc62 (if that sounds familiar it's because that's the same steel and hardness as Hock's high-carbon knives and plane blades) easy to hone to the sharpest possible edge.

The lengths listed are approximate blade lengths.

Handles are Bubinga with nothing more than an oil finish.

Ron Hock Shoulder Plane Kit Ref: KS075

The Shoulder Plane Kit is precision-made from beech and bubinga for beauty, performance and durability. This easy-to-assemble kit requires a only drill (for the locator dowels), some glue and clamps, and some fine tuning and shaping to complete. The bevel-down blade is bedded at 37.5° for low-angle end-grain planing of shoulders. 3/4" Tee Blade (#SH075) is included.

Ron Hock's precision made kit provides a quick, sure way to realize the satisfaction of using a handmade wooden plane. Perhaps the most dramatic improvement can be realised by accurizing and tuning your Spokeshave. Ron Hock Scratch Stocks are made from tough, wear-resistant bamboo plywood. Two spring steel blades are included, one of which has a quirk-bead shape cut into it, to get you started using your Scratch Stock with no more than final honing.
