The Sauno Wood Kiln

The Sauno Wood Kiln

The Sauno Method

Steam treatment of wood, followed by a controlled drying process, has a long tradition among quality furniture producers in Scandinavia. This method creates superb quality wood that is extremely stable and free from flaws.

The Sauno method is a 2 stage process. The first stage is steaming at 70°-75° which opens the pores of the wood. The second stage is thedrying process at a temperature of 40°- 50° which slowly evaporates the moisture from the centre of the timber. With this 2 stage process you reduce the risk of cracking to a minimum.

How was SAUNO developed!

The Sauno is the brainchild of a woodworker, Leif Mattsson, who developed the idea over 20 years ago. For several years he produced tailored kilns (made of aluminium), based on the SAUNO steam process.

Since those pioneering days a new Sauno unit has been developed that is better suited to the more easily constructed polystyrene boards that form the kiln. The early Sauno kilns were made from aluminium but now the kiln can now be made from inexpensive 50 mm thick insulation boards. Sauno has also developed special screws for the kiln for elastic joining of the boards.

A Sauno kiln produces steam treated wood of superb quality.. It has been sold in its present form for over 3 years and is popular in Scandinavia and Austria. It made its UK debut at The Festival of The Tree at Westonbirt 2007 where Sauno received interest from individuals, clubs and businesses who wish to build as a cost effective kiln to their own size requirements. The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum were so impressed that they bought one and there will be in use very shortly. Magazine reviews will also be published shortly. We have now sold a dozen VT3's since Westonbirt so there will be some interesting feedback arriving from our kiln makers over the next few months. We have been trying to decipher the Swedish/English instructions that were supplied but apologise if some of the phrasing is awkward!

The Sauno Wood Kiln Ref: VT3/VT5

The VT3 model is for kilns with a maximum length of 3 m and a total inner volume of 3.5 m3. Minimum dimensions are 1,0 x 1,0 x 0,6m

The Sauno Wood Dryer Unit is supplied with 40 special screws and 2 vents, a build manual including the electrical specifications and further details of the Sauno method. See the Sauno GB attachment below.

Using 2000 W of power this wood drying kiln needs about 100 - 150 kWh for each cubic metre of wood.

The larger model VT5 has a power rating of 4000 W and can have a maximum inner volume of 12.5 m3.

We have phoned DOW who make the 'Dow Solimate' as specified in the Sauno build booklet. They have said the equivalent board in Britain is the Dow 'Styrofoam SPX'. We have found a national supplier (Sheffield Insulations) who have outlets all over the country but the board can be ordered from most insulation supply companies. The board has a distinctive light blue colour.

These boards come in packs of 8 and in 2500 x 600 x 50mm sheets and cost £88.80 + VAT per pack (12sqm). You will need about 10sqm for small kiln. The glue can be any polyurethane glue, 'Gorilla Glue ' is in this category (available from Classic Hand Tools).

Sheffield Insulations Unit 27, Whitelodge Trading Estate, Offhall Rd, Norwich, NR4 6DQ, tel 01603 765660.

The minimum kiln size for the VT3 is 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.6m.

Electrical wiring

The Sauno units are not supplied with an electric lead as the specification for this is dependent on the location (inside or outside). Obviously the length of wire required is dependent on your specific requirements. Basically the cable you require is 3 core 2.5mm heavy duty flexible (HOFR, BS6500 1984) this is ideal for external and internal runs from your mains in supply to the kiln.

- For the VT3 – where the kiln is placed indoors/or out you need the above cable spec with a standard 13 amp plug connection. For outside use, as above but with an RCD trip.

- For the VT5 – Outdoors as above but with a 16 Amp Plug (the Blue Plugs you see on caravan sites) and RCD, or for indoors you can hard wire a dedicated supply from your distribution board using a 20amp fused spur and isolation switch.
