Auriou Holdfast Ref: AU-HF

Knock knock - whos there?

It's the new Auriou holdfast.

What is a holdfast?

Basically it is an iron bar in the shape of a number seven. The long leg is dropped into the bench dog hole and tightened onto the work piece by a hammer blow. Another knock, on the back of the holdfast head will release it.

Simple and quick. Holdfasts were in use in Roman times.

Auriou have made a traditional holdfast based on the above principles. Richard Maguire, the very fine workbench maker from Lincolnshire, has assisted Auriou in the design approving prototypes.

It is designed for 3/4" round bench holes and has a forged head (not cast steel, a chamfered arm with slightly convex pad (to stop the edge of the pad digging in to your workpiece) and a slightly undersized 3/4"steel post. The holdfast can also be used on 3/4" holes in the workbench legs.

The long arm is allows good access to work from all sides. The 13" hold-down post easily allows you to clamp deep pieces up to 5" thick.

The grip on the workpiece is extremely firm allowing you to plane, saw or chisel your work piece. As long as you have your mallet or hammer to hand this is a very quick and efficient workbench accessory.

If your worktop is very thin (1 1/2" - 2") then you may have to roughen up the steel post to add further grip to the post. For workbenches of 2" plus this should not be required as the posts are shot blasted to give additional grip.

Veritas Bench Blades Ref: VG22

So named because of their very low profile, they project only 6mm, above your bench top. A thumb-operated eccentric cam lever controls the sliding jaw, allowing you to secure work quickly. The jaw has a 6mm range of travel and applying up to 130kg of force. Flats on the cam provide secure stops at 3mm and 6mm of travel. The jaw face has a 5° inward cant to help hold a work piece securely. The cam and jaw are cast steel, heat-treated for surface hardness.

The standard post version is for use in a 19mm (3/4") diameter through-hole (or blind holes at least 47mm deep).
The wedge-lock version is usable at any angle from horizontal to vertical. It will anchor firmly in a 19mm (3/4") diameter through-hole in material as thin as 16mm or in blind holes that are a minimum of 34mm deep.

Veritas Bench Hold Down Ref: VG1401

The Veritas hold-down can clamp workpieces to a bench or anywhere a 3/4" hole can be drilled.

Exceptionally high clamping forces can be obtained with this hold-down for two reasons. First, with the arm free to pivot independently, all levered forces are exerted downward, without any losses due to horizontal slippage from the canting action of the hold-down post. Second, the fine barb-shaped grooves on the post resist upward forces, yet still allow easy entry into a hole. The long, low-profile arm is unobstructed at the clamping end, allowing good access to work from all sides. The 10" hold-down post gives you 8" of clamping capacity, matching the 8" throat capacity.

For use in holes where through travel is limited, a retrofit shorter hold-down post is available separately. At just 5-1/2" long, it provides about 4" of clamping capacity.

Used vertically in the top of a bench, or hori-zontally in a side skirt. Clamping forces are infinitely variable by tightening the clamping knob (machined brass) to any degree. The arm and body are made from the high-strength zinc-aluminum alloy ZA-12, and the post from machined steel.

Veritas Surface Clamp Ref: 05G1901

This fast-acting surface clamp can be used anywhere you can drill a 3/4" diameter hole. The post has a wedging mechanism that anchors it firmly (horizontally or vertically) in material as thin as 5/8" (depending on the strength of the material), making it ideal for use in jigs and fixtures, e.g., sliding tables for saws. The clamp arm (which slides easily on the post when tilted, but locks at 90°) has a 2-1/8" throat depth and can grip anything from veneer to material up to 3-3/4" thick.

Anchor wedging is controlled by the brass knob on the post and clamping pressure by the knob at the arm tip. Used horizontally, the post collar acts as a material support. Used vertically, the collar is a rub ring that protects workpieces from accidental damage by the post rings. Precision machined from brass, steel and anodized aluminum, this is a versatile work support and clamp.

Veritas Quick Release Tail Vice Ref: VG30.01

This Veritas version of a tail vice either quickly incorporates into a new bench or easily retrofits to an existing bench without major surgery. The body is ductile iron with zinc-alloy end plates, steel shafts and guide rods, and a maple handle. Installation is straightforward. All the necessary hardware is included, all you need add is the timber for the jaw. The quick-release mechanism has a simple on-off lever that engages or disengages the Acme-threaded screw. The end plates are symmetrical, so you can install the T-handle and quick-release lever in a right- or left-handed orientation, allowing you to mount the vice at either end of your bench. The mechanism can apply force (up to 135kg) in both clamping and spreading applications – something not possible with other quick-release tail vices. Maximum travel is 195mm (7.3/4"). All the vice requires is an unobstructed mounting area at least 430mm x 32mm (17" x 6.1/8") on the underside of the bench top. Made in Canada. Patent pending.
